How to celebrate NFC Month in your Community or Organization

One Office for the Aging invited family caregivers to "A Job Well Done" recognition dinner where family caregivers were treated to mini-manicures, chair massages, and dinner, all while learning about self-relaxation techniques specifically for caregivers. NFC Month 2006
There are many ways to engage community organizations, members, and businesses in your NFC Month efforts. Some suggested ways to reach out to your community include:

Letter to the Editor campaign
Local Proclamation
NFCA's Family Caregiver Story Project
Town Hall Meeting
Caregiver Recognition Events

Activities for Community-Based Organizations
  • Create Certificates of Appreciation for family caregivers to be filled out by their care recipients.
  • Display NFC Month posters in prominent places and have staff wear NFC Month buttons and T-shirts.
  • Offer family caregivers in your community support by giving an award or prize drawing that includes respite time, a dinner out, free handyman services or transportation help.
  • Host a Family Caregivers Day, with workshops and lots of resource information.
  • Start a support group for family caregivers.
  • Acknowledge and honor the activities of family caregivers in a special worship service. (Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, and Interfaith services are available from NFCA.)
Activities for Health Providers
  • Encourage family caregivers to think of themselves as members of the healthcare team with both rights and responsibilities. Provide information on both.
  • Host patient safety workshops and provide tip sheets to help family caregivers learn new skills related to their loved one's care at home.
  • Start a support group for family caregivers.
  • Tell family caregivers about NFCA and give them a copy of our newsletter Take Care! or one of our educational pamphlets.
